LP Artwork: Lena Like Latin / Lena Horne

This week's opening track, By Myself, is taken from Lena Horne's 1963 album, Lena Like Latin (aka Lena Goes Latin). The pulsating arrangements were written by Shorty Rogers and Marty Paich with orchestra conducted by one of Horne's long-time collaborators, Lenny Hayton.

It was initially released on the little-known Charter label and on MGM Records in the UK.

LP Artwork: Thanks for Nothing / Rosemary Clooney

Rosemary Clooney was signed to Reprise Records in 1963 during the company's infancy. Later that year he would sell it to Warner Bros and Thanks for Nothing proved to be her only Reprise album project.

It's her version of the Irving Berlin song, All Alone, that opens this week's program. This standard has been recorded by luminaries ranging from Connee Boswell and Julie London to Frank Sinatra and (would you believe) Miss Piggy!

LP Artwork: It's a Blue World / Mel Tormé

The Bethlehem label had signed Tormé in 1955 and, probably to ride on the success of Sinatra's In the Wee Small Hours release, asked him for a ballads album. The 15-piece orchestral accompaniment was assembled by pianist and clarinetist Al Pellegrini with subtle and suitably romantic arrangements by Pellegrini, André Previn, Sandy Courage, Marty Paiche and Russ Garcia.

When I purchased the Japanese pressing of the album, it had the lighter blue cover but I'm unsure whether the darker blue cover was the original.
