EP Artwork: Judy Garland Sings Lionel Bart's Maggie May

In August 1964 at a time when The Beatles were changing the course of popular music, Judy Garland entered the famous Abbey Road Studios in London to record a quartet of songs written by Lionel Bart. The numbers were included in the show Maggie May and as Garland was an admirer of Bart's work, she agreed to do the session.

This week's program includes the quirky number, There's Only One Union. There's a certain poignancy about this EP as it contains the last studio recordings Garland ever made (other than a few pre-records for her TV appearances).

LP Artwork: Five Feet of Soul/Jimmy Rushing

The blues shouter who made his name during his famous stint with Count Basie and His Orchestra from 1935 to 1948.

Basie felt that Rushing's blues vocals "never had an equal" even though Rushing felt he was really a ballad singer.  Later, he said, "I don't know what kind of blues singer you'd call me. I just sing 'em!"

This week's program includes a track from this album which I think is arguably his very best, and the band featured players such as Al Cohn, Snooky Young and Zoot Sims.

LP Artwork: Patti Page/In the Land of Hi-Fi

This 1956 release was Patti Page's first on the EmArcy label (the jazz wing of Mercury Records) in mono. Two years later, they released a stereo version although they had to edit some of the tracks because of the time limitations on stereo releases in the format's infancy.

The arrangements were by Pete Rugolo, best know for his work with June Christy. (By coincidence, Rugolo's Sicilian birth surname was Patti!)

Page was the top-charting vocalist and best-selling female artist of the 1950s and her six-decade long career resulted in record sales in excess of 100 million.
