LP Artwork: Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Rodgers & Hart Song Book

Here's a selection of the different artwork that appeared on various LP and EP releases from Ella Fitzgerald's second song book series celebrating the pinnacle of Great American Songbook composers.

The Rodgers & Hart album - a two LP set - was recorded between August 21st and 31st 1956 featuring arrangements by Buddy Bregman who had worked with Ella on the preceding Cole Porter Song Book.

Producer Norman Granz had wanted Nelson Riddle to handle the arrangements but he was under contract to another label and his work schedule wouldn't allow it so the young Bregman landed the arranger and conductor role for these two projects.

LP Artwork: I've Got the Music In Me / Thelma Houston & Pressure Cooker

When I was buying my first proper hi-fi back in the mid 1970s, this was the album that the specialist was using for demonstration purposes.

It was released in 1975 on the Sheffield Lab label who specialised in direct-to-disc recordings.

The band featured seasoned jazz/fusion session musicians such as Larry Carlton and Tom Scott, and the track included in this week's program, To Know You Is to Love You, co-written by Stevie Wonder, remains one of my personal favourites.

LP Artwork: Keely Smith Swingin' Pretty

The cover of Keely Smith's 1959 album, Swingin' Pretty which was her second outing with arranger/conductor, Nelson Riddle.

Unusually, several of the tracks are a combination of two tempos; an approach which works better on some compared to others.

From 1964, this is the cover for Sarah Vaughan's Latin-inspired album and features one of the songs featured in our program co-written by the multi-talented Buddy DeSylva.

Not only a fine songwriter and lyricist, but also a music publisher, movie and Broadway show producer and, importantly, co-founder of one of the most successful labels of all time, Capitol Records.
