EP Artwork: Strange Fruit

Strange Fruit originated as a poem by Jewish New Yorker Abel Meeropol (under his pseudonym Lewis Allan) and published in 1937. It was an unflinching protest against racism and the lynchings that were still commonplace in the Deep South at that time. Holiday started to perform the song in 1939 and her recording of it sold more than a million copies becoming her biggest selling release.

This dark and suitably sombre artwork was for an EP released on the Swedish Sonet label.
