LP Artwork: The Astaire Story

During the golden age of Hollywood musicals, Fred Astaire introduced over 130 great songs - many written especially for him - by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and the Gershwins.

This week's show, entitled Fred Astaire Got There First, celebrates his influence with recordings by other artists. These are sandwiched between two by Mr Astaire himself, including our opening number, Cheek to Cheek, which was originally released in the impressive four-volume set, The Astaire Story.

Produced by Norman Granz, 38 tracks were released, and the line up including many of the stars of the Jazz at the Philharmonic concert series: Oscar Peterson (p), Ray Brown (b), Alvin Stoller (d), Barney Kessel (g) along with Charlie Shavers (tp) and Flip Phillips (ts).
