LP Artwork: The Bosses

This week's show celebrates the wonderful role that Count Basie and His Orchestra played in accompanying singers.

Pure precision. Sensational sense of swing. Tight and always exciting. And ably demonstrated on this great album by Basie and Big Joe Turner. It was recorded in 1973 and released on Norman Granz's label, Pablo Records.

How about this for band accompaniment: Ray Brown (b), Irving Ashby (g), Eddie Lockjaw Davis (ts), Zoot Sims (ts), JJ Johnson (tb), Harry Sweets Edison (tpt), Louis Bellson (d).

"I think the band can really swing when it swings easy, when it can just play along like you are cutting butter."

William James "Count" Basie
(Aug 21, 1904 - Apr 26, 1984)
