LP Artwork: My Kinda Love

We recently featured a track from Claire Martin's latest - and very classy - release, Time and Place, and this week there's a number from another new album by fellow British singer, Tina May.

Entitled My Kinda Love, it's received glowing reviews not only for Tina's performance but also the arranging skills of Frank Griffith.

LP Artwork: All Alone

This week's show features two very different versions of Irving Berlin's haunting All Alone. First up was a gently swinging rendition by Sarah Vaughan, from her album, Sassy Swings Again. I doubt that Mr Berlin (who like his songs to be sung as he intended) would have approved!

Fewer liberties were taken by Frank Sinatra when he used the song as the title for his 1962 release on the label his then-new Reprise label which he'd founded a year or so beforehand. Gordon Jenkins provided his trademark, lush string arrangement, including a coda featuring the soprano, Noelie Jean Norman. The album's cover was taken from a painting that hung in Sinatra's home.

LP Artwork: Time and Place

Claire Martin's latest release on Linn Records is entitled, Time and Place. It has provided this week's show with the beautiful song, She's Leaving Home, by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

First appearing on The Beatles' Sgt Peppers album, it was one of the rare recordings when none of the famous band members played any of the musical accompaniment.

As McCartney explained, "We'd seen a story in the newspaper about a young girl who'd left home and not been found - there were a lot of this at the time - and that was enough to give us a story line."

The song fits into our theme this week of Home Sweet Home. It is beautifully sung by Claire, with a highly sensitive arrangement and performance by the Montpelier Cello Quartet - not forgetting Joe Stilgoe on backing vocals.
